Song Review: “Vanilla-Scented Laser Beams”

On April 24, 2018, Illinois natives Homesafe released its first single “Vanilla-Scented Laser Beams.” The song will be featured on the group’s debut full length album One via. Pure Noise Records.

The beginning of the music video gave me a nostalgic 80s/ ‘Stranger Things’ vibe with the fog and color scheme chosen by director Shifty Dimensions. The outfits the group wore during their performance reminded me of The Matrix with the dark attire and glasses worn. It was interesting near the end of the music video you see Homesafe playing for aliens.

The single gave glimpses to a new sound that is more on the rock and alternative side rather than an angsty, pop punk sound. The sound was similar to Such Gold with hints of Seaway. It wasn’t as raw with the rasp of the vocals and instrumentally the song wasn’t as high paced.  I’m looking forward to hearing more songs off of the upcoming album. If this single is an indication for the type of album One is, fans will be noticing a new era for Homesafe.

Here is the tracklist for One:

  1. Point Blank
  2. Run
  3. Say Something
  4. Sadistic Society
  5. Have It All
  6. Vanilla-Scented Laser Beams
  7. Suits and Ties
  8. I Don’t Know How
  9. Time Ain’t Free
  10. Stay Away
  11. Get It Right
  12. Sideways Sleeper
  13. fin

You can pre-order the album here. The album is set to release June 29. Homesafe announced a headline tour across the United States. Accompanying Homesafe will be Hot Mulligan, Heart Attack Man, and Jetty Bones.

In other news, Hawthorne Heights released Bad Frequencies, Bullet For My Valentine announced a tour via. Twitter, CHVRCHES released “Miracle,” and 5 Seconds of Summer released a live video for “Youngblood.”

Rock on, stay humble, and be positive!

My Experience on Parahoy: Deep Search Cruise

Paramore embarked on its third edition of Parahoy! on April 6, 2018. The cruise is a four day trip to paradise with Paramore. Accompanying Paramore on the cruise was: mewithoutYou, Local Natives, Judah and The Lion, Mija, Halfnoise, and Now Now. Comedians include: Jordan Rock and Ryan O’Flanagan.

Once I got onto the cruise ship, I put my belongings in my cabin and walked around until my safety briefing. After the briefing, I waited in the Spinnaker Lounge, located on Deck 13, for my group to get merchandise.

After waiting over an hour, I got to the merch store on the boat and bought two Parahoy shirts and a Paramore sweatshirt that says “Low Key, No Pressure.”

I went to eat at the Garden Café on Deck 12 then waited on the Pool Deck for Paramore to take the stage. Paramore performed at 8:00PM once the boat was out at sea.

Here is the setlist:

1. Looking Up

2. That’s What You Get

3. Ignorance

4. Daydreaming

5. Fake Happy

6. Pressure

7. Here We Go Again

8. Brighter

9. Let The Flames Begin

10. Last Hope

11. Hate To See Your Heart Break

12. Brick By Boring Brick

13. (One Of Those) Crazy Girls

14. Misery Business

15. Turn It Off

16. Grow Up

17. Told You So

18. Rose Colored Boy

During my time on the boat, there were a variety of performers and activites to get involved in. I saw the comedy show, Local Natives, Judah And The Lion, MewithoutYou, and Halfnoise perform at different times on the cruise. At the end of Local Natives set, I asked for a drumstick and setlist from members of the group and crew and I got them!

In addition to the concerts, I played bingo, tanned, played shuffleboard, visited the casino, and more. Paramore performed a mini-acoustic set while on board, and there were no cameras, videos, or audio recordings allowed of the small set. Here is what was performed at the mini-set I attended.

  1. Passionfruit (Drake Cover)
  2. Caught In The Middle
  3. Misguided Ghosts

When I went to the Bahamas, I visited Blue Lagoon Island and hung out on the private island with fellow Parahoy cruisers. The weather on the entire trip was in the 80s and sunny. When leaving the Bahamas, there was a sun shower but it cleared as Paramore took the stage.

Here is Paramore’s second set:

1. Pool

2. Crushcrushcrush x beat it mash up

3. Still Into You

4. Forgiveness

5. I Caught Myself

6. Decode

7. Never Let This Go

8. GRUDGES *FIRST TIME TO PLAY*

9. When It Rains

10. Playing God

11. Idle Worship

12. No Friend (with Aaron Weiss of MewithoutYou on stage)

13. Careful

14. Caught In The Middle

15. Everywhere (Fleetwood Mac Cover)

16. Ain’t It Fun

17. 26

18. Hard Times

Paramore had activies they were part of. One of the most memorable experiences was when Paramore had a Question and Answers session. During Paramore’s Q&A session, everyone on the cruise was informed that Paramore’s song “Hard Times” has been certified gold. Hayley Williams, Taylor York, and Zac Farro were blown away when we were all informed. It was an amazing moment I was able to share with Paramore.

While on the cruise, I met a variety of individuals including: members of mewithoutYou, Local Natives, and Brian O’ Connor, Hayley’s hairstylist/ business partner/ friend.

The biggest takeaway of the cruise is being patient. Often times, you have to wait on line (to get on and off the boat, waiting for merch, waiting to get food, etc.) In addition, it’s important to stay hydrated and wear sunscreen.

I would highly recommend a Parahoy cruise or a cruise with a band you like. It’s such a unique experience to go on a cruise and in addition hear live music everyday from bands you know or learn to know. This was my third Parahoy cruise, and each cruise was different from the last. Each cruise the boat would take us to a different location. I got to see different bands perform and discover new music. Each cruise was memorable with performances and personal memories. Each cruise had a different lineup with some joining Paramore on the voyage again. The lineups each cruise was awesome.

In other news, Beartooh released a statement that Taylor Lumley left Beartooth, Sorority Noise dropped from The Wonder Years tour, Movements dropped from an Australia tour with Moose Blood, Paramore announced an additional support for Tour 5, and Breaking Benjamin released Ember.

Rock on, stay humble, and be positive!
