I am a man with a family who lives in a town by a beach. At a young age, in the midst of some unpleasantness, I moved here, and for the first time felt like I was home. People often come to California because there are some things they would rather not go through in the cold. I suppose that’s how I ended up here too. I refer to this album as my land of Upside Down Flowers. In many way’s it’s a mirror to my world, an uncanny reflection but not quite the real thing. The songs held within it’s borders are about friends and loved ones, both real and imagined. The edges are blurred now it seems, but the sentiment remains. I didn’t write these songs to change the world, but they helped me to understand mine a little better. Of course I didn’t realize it at the time, but I guess that is the beauty of letting go. Self reflection can be painful, it can be blinding and it can be transformative. For me, the creation of this album was a little bit of all three. Enjoy – link in bio to listen.

***My apologies for the late posting. I was torn between featuring Andrew McMahon In The Wilderness and making an “In Case You Missed It” blog! Thanks for reading, and I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving (if you celebrate the holiday.)

Concert Review: Mayday Parade @ House Of Blues Boston, MA

Mayday Parade has embarked on the “Welcome To Sunnyland” tour across the United States. Accompanying Mayday Parade on tour are This Wild Life, William Ryan Key, and Oh, Weatherly.

I attended the Boston date, Nov. 10, 2018. I purchased a bundle when the tickets were in pre-sale and got a VIP Meet & Greet Experience Package. The package includes one ticket to the event with early entry, a meet and greet with Mayday Parade, a Mayday Parade shirt, a signed copy of Sunnyland, a pop socket, and a “Welcome to Sunnyland” postcard.

This was my fifth time meeting Mayday Parade. Derek Sanders, Alex Garcia, Brooks Betts, Jeremy Lenzo, and Jake Bundrick. If you have not been to a Mayday Parade meet and greet and have bought or is buying a meet and greet, the format of their meet and greet is different. The meet and greet is more of a hang out where the members go up to you and talk with you. I got the chance to talk with all of the guys, and they’re all so kind and humble. Both Brooks Betts and Jeremy Lenzo remembered me, and it was awesome getting to catch up with the guys about their latest album, Sunnyland, their experience on the road, and overall their well being. Here are some pictures of the meet and greet:

The House Of Blues in Boston, MA holds approximately 2,500 people. I’ve never been to the venue for the show, but I enjoyed the atmosphere of it. The venue had three levels that were visible in the main part of the venue which was the floor, and two levels of balcony. The venue has good sound quality, and it was very spacious. What I enjoyed about the venue is that prior to the show, an announcement was made stating the policy of the venue: no re-entry, no smoking in the venue, and attendees should observe the exits to the venue and to enjoy to be safe.

The lineup was as followed: Oh, Weatherly, William Ryan Key, This Wild Life, and Mayday Parade. Oh, Weatherly took the stage first, and the group was phenomenal live. Oh, Weatherly is from Dallas, TX and they were featured on my 18 Bands To Check Out In 2018. The group released Lips Like Oxygen and Jake Bundrick, drummer of Mayday Parade, helped produce the album.  Oh, Weatherly’s sound live was was as great as their album. The vocals were clean and crisp, the instrumentals were on point, and their sound fit the vibe to the tour. Here is Oh, Weatherly’s setlist to the best of my knowledge:

  1. Burned Out
  2. Here Tonight
  3. Chasing California
  4. Make You Bright
  5. I Think I Want You
  6. Dark of the Night
  7. Lost and Found

Next on stage was William Ryan Key. For those who are not familiar with him, he was the vocalist of Yellowcard. Since Yellowcard’s departure (announced in 2016 and finished their farewell tour in 2017) William Ryan Key has been making music in a studio created in his house. During William Ryan Key’s set, Anthony Delgrosso drummed for the majority of the set. I have seen Yellowcard perform Vans Warped Tour and was very excited to see William Ryan Key since he released an EP Thirteen. He is releasing a new EP on Nov. 30. His sound after Yellowcard is acoustic which I personally enjoyed. Here is William Ryan Key’s setlist:

  1. Vultures
  2. Old Friends
  3. The Bowery
  4. Downtown Uptown
  5. Ocean Avenue (Yellowcard Song)
  6. Virtue

Next to take the stage was This Wild Life. This Wild Life is an acoustic pop punk duo from Long Beach, CA. This Wild Life has performed with Mayday Parade on the AP Tour. I’ve seen This Wild Life perform more than 5 times on tour with Mayday Parade, Vans Warped Tour, and their own tours. I love the sound that This Wild Life has; it’s different than other bands in the industry. During “Puppy Love” Kevin Jordan of This Wild Life asked fans to put pictures up of their dogs which was very cute considering I have a dog. During “Hold You Here” This Wild Life put a spotlight on a couple who loves This Wild Life and dedicated the song to any couple on the tour. Here is This Wild Life’s setlist:

  1. Taped Intro (Video here.)
  2. Concrete
  3. Positively Negative
  4. Puppy Love
  5. Westside
  6. History
  7. Hold You Here
  8. What’s My Age Again? / All the Small Things / First Date (Blink 182 Cover)
  9. Catie Rae
  10. Headfirst
  11. No More Bad Days

After all the opening bands played their sets and a short intermission was taken, Mayday Parade took the stage and played these songs:

  1. Never Sure
  2. Jersey
  3. It’s Hard To Be Religious When Certain People Are Never Incinerated By Bolts Of Lightning
  4. Black Cat
  5. Hold Onto Me
  6. Piece Of Your Heart
  7. I Swear This Time I Mean It
  8. My Friends Over You / I’m Not Okay (I Promise) / Cute Without The ‘E’ (Cut From The Team)
  9. Jamie All Over
  10. Somebody That I Used To Know (Gotye Cover)
  11. Anywhere But Here
  12. One Of Us
  13. Looks Red, Tastes Blue
  14. Three Cheers For Five Years
  15. Miserable At Best
  16. Stay
  17. Oh Well, Oh Well **ENCORE**

The setlist was a refreshment from previous tours. I like the fact Mayday Parade incorperated songs from older albums and their latest album, Sunnyland. Mayday Parade changed their setlist during the tour, and I was very glad to see that Mayday Parade put in “It’s Hard To Be Religious When Certain People Are Never Incinerated by Bolts Of Lightning.” I’m glad that Mayday Parade only had two parts of the show where they played covers. Personally, I wish Mayday Parade put in “Take My Breath Away,” and “Where You Are.” The setlist has a mix of old, new, and songs that the group doesn’t play very often which I especially enjoyed since I go to a lot of Mayday Parade’s shows.  I feel like overall Mayday Parade made an eclectic setlist that fits the Sunnyland vibe.

Mayday Parade in an impeccable band overall. The band puts out amazing albums, great shows, and continues to impress the fans with their quality work. Mayday Parade is timeless. If you have yet to hear Sunnyland, Mayday Parade’s latest album, I’d highly recommend.

Rock on, stay humble, and be positive!
