Why More Bands Should Take Notes From The Maine’s Playbook

From The Way We Talk to XOXO: From Love And Anxiety in Real Time, I have grown up and loved every single album from The Maine. The Maine is proof when you fall, you get back up.

Some background if you’re unfamiliar with The Maine’s history as a band: The Maine was signed onto a major record label but was dropped a few years into their career. You’re probably thinking…okay, now what? How could a band recover? The Maine created their own record label, 8123, which included bands like: Beach Weather, Brighten, and more.

The Maine’s method of creating music just makes sense. Almost every two years The Maine has released a new album. Some may say The Maine is great with ‘Time” (pun intended.) Once a new album is released by The Maine, they tour around the world and showcase the amazingness of the album. From a production standpoint, I can say I thoroughly enjoy each album The Maine has put out. I love that when you listen front to back, almost every song flows beautifully into each other. Each album tends to have a great “sing along” song near the end of the album, a song that makes you want to dance, some interludes, songs that hit you right in the feels, and great messaging.

What I love the most about The Maine: they care about their fans. The Maine brought fans along the musical journey when creating new albums. “Miserable Youth” is a YouTube series The Maine hosts where they vlog the experience from beginning to end of their journey of creating new music. The episodes contain content about their upcoming albums which includes snippets of songs that may or may not make the album. As a fan, it’s a treat to get to experience the inner workings of an album along with the band.

The Maine gives back to their fans by creating and hosting their own festivals like 8123 Fest and Lovely Little Weekend. Fans come together all weekend from around the world to mingle, celebrate The Maine and hear live music. The 8123 community is truly a kind, loving community of people. I’m fortunate to have attended many shows by The Maine including Lovely Little Weekend in New York City. It was nothing short of epic. It may have taken the place of the best live concert I’ve ever been to.

The Maine is proof that hard work, loving your music and fans is all you need to be “successful” as a band. From the snippets from The Maine’s latest episode of “Miserable Youth,” to dropping two singles in one night, I’m excited to see what songs The Maine chooses for album number 9.

In case you want to watch the new ‘season’ of Miserable Youth…
